The Thermometer Chant for First Grade Science
When teaching young learners, chants can be an excellent tool to facilitate memorization (and honestly, older learners benefit from this as well). My first graders were struggling to remember how to read a thermometer, so I created this admittedly over complicated anchor to help them. While I plan to revise this chart, I found the chant I created to be pretty useful for the students.
Start reading from the bottom to the TOP, TOP, TOP!
Where the red line is that’s where you STOP, STOP, STOP!
The further up you go means it’s HOT, HOT, HOT!
I would drop the ending of the chant as it seems to be a little much for the age group, but the beginning part does a great job sticking!
Happy Teaching!
